Say No to Heart Disease (Optimum Nutrition Handbook)

Customer Review: Surprise, surprise, heart disease is actually reversible!
One of the best things about this book for me was discovering that I am insulin-resistant and that this condition predisposes me to type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In the book there is an insulin-resistance questionnaire to fill in which makes it abundantly clear whether you are or are not. Apparently 25% of British people are thought to have this condition and it can be sorted out in 3 months, by correct diet.

It is also interesting that half of those with high blood pressure are insulin-resistant without even knowing it. I had actually bought this book as my husband has borderline high blood pressure and I wondered if there was information that would help him, little realising it would help me also. Having read it, I now think we are both insulin-resistant and am adjusting our diets accordingly.

There are also other interesting snippets, such as the fact that too much sugar depletes the mineral magnesium and by increasing magnesium (such as through eating sunflower seeds and almonds) blood pressure can be lowered.

It is wonderful to think that heart disease is generally preventable and even reversible if the guidelines are followed. Try it!

Diet Your Way to Hypertension-Free Life
If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure or hypertension, one of the first things that your doctor is likely to do is to put you on a low-salt diet. This isn’t as bad as it sounds. A low-salt diet doesn’t mean a no-salt diet. You are going to have to make some changes though.

Hypertension – A Silent Killer Rises Due To Rise in Blood Pressure
Hypertension is often known as a silent killer. Hypertension is the increase in blood pressure inside the arteries, caused due to high pressure exerted by the heart to pump the blood into the system. In 90 percent to 95 percent of high blood pressure cases, there is no identifiable cause. In addition to the appropriate medications, with correct lifestyle interventions, one can get hypertension under control and significantly lower one’s risk of developing life-threatening diseases.
