Atherosclerosis is an abnormal inflammatory process inside artery walls as the result of complex interactions among “bad” cholesterol (LDL), platelets, calcium, and inflammatory cells. A plaque made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood forms on the inside artery-cell wall. In the final (fifth) stage of the process unstable plaque may break free and form a blood clot in the artery causing blood flow to part of the heart muscle to be cut off and a heart attack results.
